22 - 24 April 2009: Joint Pack2Go Europe - FPI Summit in Boston.
On 22-24 April 2009 Pack2Go Europe and the Foodservice & Packaging
Institute in the USA met in Boston,
Massachussets at the Four Seasons Hotel for a fifth joint meeting. In
practice, this was the first time that the two associations met since the
founding of Pack2Go Europe (for the first four meetings the European side was
represented by the European Food Service and Packaging Assocation). During the general session on Thursday morning,
April 23, attendees participated in FPI’s Foodservice Packaging Advisory
Council session. The theme was “The Process of Packaging Development,” with
keynote speakers from HAVI Global Solutions, packaging supply
chain partner for McDonald’s Corporation, and Boxer, McDonald’s packaging design consultancy.
Advisory council members offered their own comments on the topic, followed by
an interactive discussion with attendees. Members of the advisory council
included : The two sessions on Friday, April 24, focused on
the theme of “Turbulence in a Double ‘E’ World: How the economy and the
environment affect global foodservice packaging.” First, attendees heard a
presentation on the state of the global economy, followed by Rosabeth Moss
Kanter, Ernest L. Arbuckle professor of business administration at Harvard
Business School, who gave attendees her thoughts on how to survive this
recession – and emerge triumphant. The second topic of the day was the
environment, with North American and European regulatory updates, as well as
presentations on carbon footprinting by Scott Kaufman, U.S. project
manager at Carbon Trust,
and sustainable packaging by Julian
Carroll, managing director at
EUROPEN, The European Organization for Packaging and the Environment. In
addition to the meetings, had a chance to network with their peers during
a truly memorable tour of historic Boston, an evening at the
Harvard Club and a clambake on Beacon Hill.
